Luftgekühlt 11: A Porsche Paradise – And Why the Bull City is Revving Up for the Future

October 15, 2025

As a financial advisor based in the heart of Durham, NC, I spend my days helping clients navigate their financial futures – from retirement planning to investment strategies tailored for the Research Triangle's dynamic economy. But last weekend, on October 4, 2025, my routine took an exhilarating detour. Luftgekühlt 11, the premier celebration of air-cooled Porsches, transformed the American Tobacco Campus – literally right outside my office window – into a symphony of engineering marvels and automotive history. The event proved to be an unforgettable immersion in Porsche heritage, all while underscoring why Durham has become such an exceptional place to live, work, and admire classic cars.

Picture this: hundreds of meticulously curated air-cooled Porsches, from humble 356s to rare racers, scattered artfully across the campus's lawns and courtyards. Luftgekühlt, German for "air-cooled," isn't just a car show; it's a storytelling festival where each vehicle whispers tales of innovation, speed, and passion. And for the first time on the East Coast, Durham's historic American Tobacco Campus, once the epicenter of Lucky Strike production, served as the perfect, gritty-yet-refined backdrop. It was a photographer's dream. The event drew roughly 9,000 enthusiasts from 30 states, cementing the Bull City's position as a destination location.

Spotlight on the Stars: Notable Rides That Stole the Show

Wandering the American Tobacco Campus grounds felt like flipping through a living Porsche museum, with the 30th anniversary of the 993-generation 911 taking center stage – the last air-cooled 911 officially produced by Stuttgart, a fitting swan song for an era. Organizers tucked cars into every nook, from the amphitheater's edge to hidden alcoves, encouraging attendees to scan QR codes via the Bramo app for deep dives into each machine's story. Here are a few standouts that had even this non-gearhead advisor hitting pause on my day:

  • Christopher Moore's 1978 Porsche 911 SC (Cashmere Beige Winner): This crowd-pleaser snagged the inaugural Luftgekühlt Community Award, voted by attendees and presented by Hagerty. With over 104,000 miles on the clock, it's no trailer queen – Moore's daily-driver vibe captured the event's ethos of accessible Porsche passion. Restored but road-worn, its subtle beige hue blended seamlessly with the fall foliage, a testament to how these icons age gracefully.
  • The 1998 Porsche 911 GT2 (993 Era Beast): As the featured generation, the 993 GT2 embodied raw, unfiltered performance. This homologation special, with its wide-body flares and turbocharged fury, was a highlight among road and race cars from the era. Owned by a private collector, it evoked the '90s golden age of air-cooled supremacy, reminding us why the 993 is often called the "sweet spot" in 911 evolution.
  • Bobby Rahal's 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS: Fresh from Gunnar Racing's restoration wizardry, this mid-engine coupe – raced by legends like Al Holbert – was a motorsport icon on display. Rahal, the IndyCar champ, shared stories during a Q&A, linking it to Porsche's racing DNA. Sleek and purposeful, it sat like a coiled spring, a far cry from modern EVs and a nod to the hand-built artistry that defined early Porsches.
  • The Legendary 1976 Porsche 934 (Raced by Al Holbert): One of just 34 built, this Group 4 racer once thundered around tracks with Holbert at the wheel. Its turbocharged flat-six and wild aero screamed '70s excess, drawing crowds for rev sessions that vibrated the campus. Curated by AJR Restorations, it highlighted Luft's blend of rarity and accessibility – stories shared via video premieres and owner chats.

These weren't dusty relics; many were driven in by owners, engines still warm from cross-country hauls. Amid Q&As with racers like Tommy Kendall and autograph sessions with Porsche historian Dieter Inzenhofer, the event buzzed with camaraderie. But for me, Luft wasn't just about the cars, it was about the Bull City, its heritage, and its phenomenal renaissance.

From Tobacco to Innovation Hub: Durham's Epic Level-Up

Events like Luftgekühlt don't just happen anywhere.  They require a truly unique location.  Durham's industrial past & vibrant, forward-thinking identity make it one of the Southeast's hottest spots for professionals and families. Safety, once a concern, is no longer a headline – it's a success story.  Downtown feels alive and secure, with increased foot traffic, enhanced public transit, and neighborhood watch programs creating a welcoming vibe. As a financial advisor serving Durham, I've seen industry move in and property values appreciate, both offering tangible gains for residents.

The American Tobacco Campus exemplifies this transformation. Once a faded factory district, it's now a mixed-use gem with offices, eateries, and green spaces – and it's only getting better. Just next door to my office, the American Underground startup incubator is relocating back to its original 2010 roots on campus this year, injecting fresh energy into our daily workflow. This startup hub, supporting over 275 Triangle ventures, will foster even more innovation right in our backyard. Not to be outdone, Dollar Shave Club celebrated its grand opening of a 17,500-square-foot headquarters in the Crowe Building this September, drawing talent with promises of work-life balance amid yoga studios and local brews. And capping the momentum? The Durham Chamber of Commerce is moving in, centralizing economic growth efforts and underscoring the campus as a nexus for business.

These moves aren't coincidences; they're magnets for ambitious minds. With expansions like these, Durham is prioritizing inclusive growth. Proximity to Duke University, the Research Triangle Park, and RDU Airport means seamless access to talent and opportunity, all while keeping true to Durham's roots.

Durham, Financial Advice, And Your Future

As I watched Luftgekühlt's finale – a community-voted award ceremony under the campus's iconic smokestacks – I couldn't help but reflect on Durham's broader appeal. This city isn't just safer; it's smarter, with startup ecosystems breeding the next big ideas and historic sites like the American Tobacco Campus blending nostalgia with modernity. For families planning legacies or entrepreneurs scaling ventures, it's a prime canvas.
